Living Near Power Lines and EMF Radiation - Dangerous to your Health?

June 11th, 2012 3:35 PM by Taydus Taydus

I will often run into the question of power lines, and recently came across the situation again.

The answer is, I don't have an answer.  If you search the web you will find legions of supporters and oppositions on both sides of the divide.  There are claims that living near power lines can increase your risk for certain cancers.  Then you will find an argument opposing such claims.

I think when it comes down to making a decision to buy or not to buy based on the proximity of the house to power lines, my best advice is that I have not found enough data to support an argument for either side, and that you need to make the decision based on your own comfort level.  If it is going to keep you up at night, or if you are going to worry about your children playing in the yard, then maybe a home near the lines is not for you.  If you have done your homework and you and your family are comfortable with the distance between your home and the nearest power line, then the subject can be checked off your "con" list.

My advice?  Do your homework.  Read all that you can and educate yourself.

One more thing to consider:  If the power lines have given you reason to pause remember, it may be a concern (or not) for a future buyer when you go to re-sell your home.

I would love to hear your opinon on this subject.

1. Would you buy a home near power lines?

2. How far away is far enough?

3. Would the power lines in the above photo bother you?

4. Would the type of power line make a difference in your decision - EHV Transmission Power Lines vs. EHV High-voltage Lines? (I am sure there are other types - please feel free to educate me :)

6. What about lines that are buried underground?

7. Any other comments?

Like I said, I do not have the answers to this very debatable question however I would be very interested in your opinion.

Just a quick tip when reading my blog - did you know that if you click "post a comment" at the bottom of the blog you are reading you can see what others have posted? The number in parenthesis is the number of comments currently made :)
